from my understanding you need to power on the unit then in the main menu select video in then you press play to record from the device connected to your video/audio in connection.

as i do not know much about connecting up the unit to a sattelite box... maybe the signal is copy protected or something?

maybe you should try connecting up another device and see if it records the signal from that?

also you need to make sure the hdd in the unit is formatted correctly so it can be used to record from a video in source.
