When you look at the obvious places — theaters, sports arenas, and large retail chains — digital signage is clearly showing signs of becoming a real killer application for professional AV installations. And that may indeed prove to be the case. However, it's only going to happen if the technology can reach down to much smaller installations, too, such as single mom-and-pop-type retail stores, small-company lobbies, and schools. But that's not going to happen without some truly intuitive and inexpensive solutions, and Mediagate may just have one.

The growing antagonism between Google/You Tube and the creators who “involuntarily supply” their video content has shown that the PC is becoming the place to go to watch videos. So wouldn’t it be nice if you could stash all of your huge video and music files someplace other than your own computer’s hard drive? And if such a place could be easily connected to your living room TV and stereo system, so you could view the videos and listen to music without having to integrate a PC into your living room stack of gear? This might not be quite as earth-rattling as iTunes getting ported to Windows, but it comes fairly close. MediaGate is finally launching its heralded media serving products here in the US of A, after spending two painstakingly long years parading around and thrilling folks in Japan.

This little wonder is not a true Media Center PC, and nor is it a simple network extender with media playing capabilities. What it is, is just about the nicest way to stream almost any form of media from your main PC or notebook, to your lounge room TV and stereo.

The Media Gate is very much a product of its namesake -- acting as a gateway to store or stream all manner of digital media to your TV and home theatre. There are a number of products like this on the market but most lack something: the ability to play certain formats, an intuive interface, or simply exhorbitant pricing.
